Chapter 4 – Halt and Consider

Ezri was bold. Confident. Clever. She turned even her imprisonment into an opportunity. But when everything else was stripped away—her weapons, her wand, her freedom—she was left with a gnawing question: Who am I without these things?

Sometimes God halts us too—not with a shout from a guard, but with a trial or loss that strips away what we cling to for identity or strength. We are stopped, confined, and forced to sit with our thoughts. Like Ezri in the crate, we may wrestle with feelings of vulnerability, loss, and doubt. And like her, we may be tempted to believe we are defined by what we’ve lost.

But Scripture tells a different story. Our identity isn’t found in what we do or what we hold. It’s found in whose we are. God doesn’t need our abilities, titles, or talents. He doesn’t need what we bring to the table. He doesn’t want what we offer. He wants us—even when we feel powerless or broken. Sometimes He halts us not to defeat us, but to strip us down to the truth: that He is our strength, and our identity is secure in Him.

Key Verse

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10a (WEB)

Reflection Questions

  1. What do you tend to rely on for your sense of identity or worth?
Are there talents, roles, or possessions that you feel define who you are?
  2. Has God ever “halted” your life through a trial, setback, or loss?
How did that experience challenge or grow your faith?
  3. How do you respond when you feel powerless or uncertain?
Do you lean into God’s strength, or do you try to take control?
  4. What does it mean to you personally to “be still and know that [He] is God”?
How can you practice that stillness in your current circumstances?
  5. Is there anything God might be asking you to let go of, so you can trust Him more fully?
What would it look like to surrender that today?

Prayer

Father,
When I feel stripped of strength or identity, remind me that I am Yours. Teach me not to define myself by what I do or what I have, but by Your love and calling. Even when You halt my plans, help me trust that You are still working. Let me rest in the truth that nothing I lose can take me out of Your hand.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
