Ezri’s decision to enter Gloomsway Gorge was a calculated risk. Her urgency outweighed her fear. But even with careful planning, she found herself surrounded, weapons aimed at her from every direction.
She didn’t panic.
She didn’t beg.
She rode forward with calm resolve, knowing she may have to fight, surrender, or endure something she hadn’t yet imagined. Her confidence wasn’t foolish—it was trained, purposeful, and rooted in something deeper than circumstance. It was courage when there was no way out.
The Christian life brings moments like that. Times when everything seems to close in, when we’re misunderstood, mistreated, or unfairly targeted. Times when there is no easy exit. In those moments, we’re called not to panic, but to trust.
Key Verse (WEB)
“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. In God, I praise his word. In God, I have put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?”
—Psalm 56:3–4 (WEB)
Ezri didn’t know what would happen next—but she knew who she was and what she had to do. We, too, are called to stand firm when life closes in. The psalmist reminds us: fear doesn’t disqualify faith—it invites it. “When I am afraid…” not if, but when. Fear comes, but trust rises.
Even surrounded by enemies, we are never outside of God’s presence or His plan. When there’s no escape, we don’t crumble—we stand in faith, and God strengthens us in the fire.
Reflection Questions
- Have you ever felt surrounded by challenges or people who stood against you?
- How did you respond in that moment—did you panic, withdraw, or stand firm?
- What does it look like for you to trust God even when escape seems impossible?
- Are you facing a “Gloomsway Gorge” moment now? How can you lean on God for courage?
Prayer
Lord God,
When I feel surrounded and the odds are stacked against me, help me to respond with courage, clarity, and faith. You are my refuge even when I see no way out. Remind me that I am never truly trapped when I walk with You. Teach me to stand firm, to walk boldly, and to trust You no matter the circumstance.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
